The Apokoronas area

The district of Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide fertile plain with rolling hills.

Here you will find many picturesque villages with quaint traditional Tavernas, and interesting sights, such as Lake Kournas, the island's only freshwater lake.

There are many local ancient sites, such as Aptera located on a hill above the bay of Souda, founded in the 7th century BC it was once one of the largest city states in Crete. Today you can see Roman Cisterns, an amphitheatre, and a Turkish fort among other remains.

There are said to be over 200 sea caves around the region, making it the perfect place for cave-diving.

The village of Plaka

Plaka is a small village set on a hill with beautiful views overlooking Almyrida and Souda bay and 5 minutes drive from our Villa, it has a picturesque main square with several tavernas and cafes. In the local shops and tavernas you will find very good local wine, olive oil, and tsikoudia (raki).


The small fishing village of Almyrida is about 20km from Chania and just 10 minutes drive from our Villa, Almyrida remains small and relatively unspoilt, and is surrounded by beautiful hills of olive trees. It boasts crystal clear waters, safe and organised beaches (awarded the blue flag every year). The sea is quite shallow, making it ideal for families with small children.

There is a 24 hour taxi service as well as a regular bus service to the city of Chania.

At the local tavernas you can enjoy fresh fish and the celebrated Cretan cuisine. For a night out you have many choices of tavernas, restaurants, and cafes by the sea front. You’ll find many shops with locally made olive oil, wine, honey, cheese and tsikoudia (raki), as well as traditional local arts and souvenirs.


A larger Village 15 minutes drive away, Kalives is a traditional cretan working village, it has several beaches, many Tavernas, a pharmacy, butchers, banks, bakers, greengrocers and many other shops with locally made olive oil, wine, honey, cheese and tsikoudia (raki), as well as traditional local arts and souvenirs.

There is a regular taxi service as well as a regular bus service to the city of Chania and Almyrida.


Gavalochori is about 4km inland from the Almirida, a 15 minute drive from our Villa. It is a very old village with an interesting history that can be explored at the local Folklore Museum. The village has several shops taverns, cafes, and a handicrafts shop. There are over a dozen Greek Orthodox churches around the area, Roman tombs, Venetian arches and wells, and an ancient olive oil factory.


A small seaside town about 30 minutes away by car. Georgioupolis has a long sandy beach, a small harbour, and many Tavernas, restaurants and tourist shops..

4km inland from Georgioupolis there is Kournas lake, this is the only freshwater lake in Crete, here you can swim in the shallow waters, or relax on a pedalo. There are souvenirs shops selling their own handicrafts and items from the pottery workshops There are many Tavernas/restaurants overlooking the lake, offering traditional Cretan dishes.
